Geomorphology

Earth Science

The scientific study of the origin and evolution of topographic and bathymetric features generated by physical, chemical or biological processes operating at or near Earth's surface. Geomorphologists combine field observation, physical experiments and numerical modeling to read landform history and predict change, working across physical geography, geology, geodesy, climatology and engineering; on this atlas the discipline carries the surface processes, while places and their landforms stay with geography. Facts
Central Question
Why do landscapes look the way they do, and how do landforms and terrain evolve? 1
Scope
Geomorphology studies the origin and evolution of landforms and the surface processes, erosion, deposition, weathering and tectonics, that produce them. 1
Significance
Geomorphology assesses natural hazards such as landslides and coastal erosion and explains how a landscape came to have its present shape. 1
