The Alexander Archipelago is a roughly 300 mile long chain of about 1,100 islands off the coast of southeastern Alaska, separated by deep channels and fjords and representing the tops of submerged coastal mountains that rise steeply from the Pacific Ocean. The archipelago shelters the northern Inside Passage and holds the largest towns in southeastern Alaska, Ketchikan and Sitka, supported chiefly by tourism, fishing and logging.
