Alder Gulch, also called Alder Creek, is a gold-mining site in the Ruby River valley in Madison County, Montana. Gold was discovered there on May 26, 1863, by William Fairweather and a small party of prospectors returning from an expedition, touching off a rush that brought more than ten thousand miners to the area within three months. The gulch, named for the alder bushes growing along its creek, proved to be one of the richest placer gold deposits ever found, yielding an estimated thirty million dollars in gold over its first three years.
