William Morris Davis was an American geologist, geomorphologist and meteorologist, born in 1850 in Philadelphia and died in 1934 in Pasadena, California. He studied geology and geography at Harvard's Lawrence Scientific School and later taught there, developing the cycle of erosion, a model describing how landscapes evolve through youth, maturity and old age stages toward a low relief surface called a peneplain, work that shaped the founding vocabulary of landform study.
