Alpamayo, also known by its older name Shuyturaju, stands in the Cordillera Blanca of the Peruvian Andes, immediately beside the slightly taller peak Quitaraju, with Alpamayo Creek rising on its northwestern flank. It is a non-volcanic, ice-clad granite peak, part of the same tectonically uplifted range that includes Huascaran, and is widely regarded as one of the most strikingly symmetrical, pyramid-shaped mountains in the Cordillera Blanca, a reputation that has made it one of the most photographed peaks in the Peruvian Andes.
