Alcove is the geological and geographic term for a steep sided hollow eroded into the face of an exposed cliff or rock wall of uniform rock, produced by weathering, erosion, dry granular flow and stress acting on the rock. Wind occurring in the mid to late summer can also steepen the edges of the hollow, contributing to the failure and shaping of sand deposits within it.
