The study of the ocean as a physical system: its currents and circulation, the sea floor beneath it, and the chemistry and physics of the water itself, distinct from the marine life the Nature Atlas covers. The modern science dates its founding to a single voyage: the 1872 to 1876 Challenger expedition circled the globe taking systematic soundings, dredges and water samples, and its supervisor John Murray called the resulting report the greatest advance in the knowledge of our planet since the celebrated discoveries of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
