A barachois is a coastal lagoon partly or entirely cut off from the open ocean by a bar of sand or shingle. The term is used in Atlantic Canada, in Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and on Reunion and Mauritius. On Diego Garcia in the British Indian Ocean Territory it instead names the narrow mouthed saltwater wetlands found within the island's lagoon.
