Don Walsh was an American oceanographer, United States Navy officer and marine policy specialist, born in 1931 in Berkeley, California, and died in 2023. Aboard the bathyscaphe Trieste, he and Jacques Piccard made a record maximum descent into the Challenger Deep, the deepest known point of the world's oceans, on January 23, 1960, reaching a depth later measured at about 35,798 feet.
