Working at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, he collaborated with oceanographic cartographer Marie Tharp to map the Mid-Atlantic Ridge during the 1950s, work that revealed the global mid-ocean ridge system and contributed evidence supporting plate tectonics.
