Henry Bryant Bigelow was an American oceanographer and marine biologist, born in 1879 in Boston and died in 1967 in Concord, Massachusetts. He taught at Harvard University for sixty years and served as the founding director of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. An expert on coelenterates and elasmobranchs, he published more than one hundred papers and several books, including the 1953 reference work Fishes of the Gulf of Maine, and described roughly one hundred ten new species over his career.
