Auguste Antoine Piccard was a Swiss physicist, inventor and explorer, born in 1884 in Basel and died in 1962 in Lausanne. He is known for record breaking hydrogen balloon flights with which he studied the Earth's upper atmosphere and became the first person to enter the stratosphere, and for inventing the bathyscaphe, a free diving deep submergence vehicle including the first such craft, FNRS-2, that opened the way to exploring the deep ocean.
