Sir Charles Wyville Thomson was a Scottish natural historian and marine zoologist, born in 1830 in Linlithgow and died in 1882 in the same town. He served as chief scientist on the Challenger expedition, the pioneering four year global survey of the deep ocean, and his work there revolutionized oceanography and led to his being knighted.
