Tanah Lot

Tanah Lot is a rock formation just offshore from the village of Beraban in the Tabanan Regency of Bali, Indonesia, whose name means land in the sea in Balinese. The formation is reachable on foot only at low tide and carries Pura Tanah Lot, one of the island seven main sea temples, traditionally attributed to the sixteenth century religious figure Dang Hyang Nirartha and dedicated to the sea god Dewa Baruna. More than a third of the visible rock is now artificial, the result of Japanese funded restoration work carried out in the 1980s to stop the formation from eroding away.
