Robert Sinclair Dietz was an American marine geologist, geophysicist and oceanographer, born in 1914 in Westfield, New Jersey, and died in 1995 in Tempe, Arizona. Working alongside Harry Hess, he conducted pioneering research on seafloor spreading published as early as 1960 and 1961. He also made significant contributions to impact crater research, becoming the first to recognize the Sudbury Basin in Canada as an ancient impact structure and helping establish shatter cones as evidence of past impacts.
