Marl is an earthy material rich in carbonate minerals, clays and silt; when hardened into rock this becomes marlstone. It typically contains thirty five to sixty five percent clay and sixty five to thirty five percent carbonate, an intimate mixture of clay and calcium carbonate formed under freshwater conditions.
