The Mercia Mudstone Group is a middle-to-late Triassic sequence of rock, spanning the Anisian to the Rhaetian age, spread across a series of connected basins from Devon and Somerset north through the Midlands and Wales into the Carlisle Basin, reaching its greatest thickness, over 1,350 meters, in the Cheshire Basin. It consists mainly of mudstone along with siltstone and sandstone, and it carries economically significant evaporite deposits of halite and anhydrite, while beds such as the North Curry Sandstone were historically quarried for building stone.
