The 1995 Kobe earthquake, also known as the Great Hanshin earthquake, struck the southern part of Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, on January 17, 1995, at 5:46 in the morning local time. It measured 6.9 on the moment magnitude scale with a maximum intensity of 7 on the Japan Meteorological Agency scale, and its tremors lasted about 20 seconds. The hypocenter lay 17 kilometers beneath the northern end of Awaji Island, about 20 kilometers from the center of Kobe.
