Pegmatite

Igneous Rocks

A pegmatite is an igneous rock with a very coarse texture, its interlocking crystals usually larger than one centimeter and sometimes larger than a meter. Most pegmatites have a granitic composition dominated by quartz, feldspar and mica, and they form from the last fluid fraction of a large crystallizing magma body. A pegmatite is an igneous rock showing a very coarse texture, with large interlocking crystals usually greater in size than 1 cm (0.4 in) and sometimes greater than 1 meter (3 ft). Most pegmatites are composed of quartz, feldspar, and mica, having a similar silicic composition to granite.

Other occurrences are as masses adjacent to ultramafic intrusives, associated with lamprophyre dikes and as large crystals in pegmatites. It commonly occurs as a detrital mineral in stream and beach sands because of its hardness and resistance to weathering.
