Vinschgau, also called Val Venosta in Italian, is the upper part of the Adige (Etsch) river valley in the western part of South Tyrol, Italy, running from the Merano basin east to the Reschen Pass in the northwest. The valley is bordered by the Ötztal Alps to the north and other Alpine ranges to the west and south. The district, established in 1962, comprises 13 municipalities centered on Schlanders, covers about 1,442 square kilometers, and has a population of roughly 35,000.
