The first period of the Paleoproterozoic era, spanning 2.5 billion to 2.3 billion years ago. Atmospheric free oxygen rose permanently during the Siderian and the following Rhyacian period in the Great Oxidation Event, the first great environmental crisis in Earth's history, driven by photosynthetic cyanobacteria and ending the planet's prior anoxic atmosphere.
