The geological eons and eras this atlas records, from the Hadean through the Phanerozoic, each spanning a vast span of Earth's history marked by a distinctive set of rock formations, atmospheric conditions or life forms. This category excludes a shorter geological period or epoch nested inside an era, and excludes the specific processes and events, such as an extinction or a mountain building episode, that occurred within it, each its own entity.
