Processes studied under oceanography, the atlas's discipline for the ocean as a physical, chemical and biological system. Includes Thermohaline Circulation, the global deep-ocean conveyor driven by differences in temperature and salinity; Upwelling, the rise of cold, nutrient-rich deep water to the surface driven by wind and the Earth's rotation; and Ocean Acidification, the ongoing drop in ocean pH driven by the ocean's absorption of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Belongs here: a process whose primary discipline is the physical or chemical behavior of ocean water. Does not belong here: an atmospheric process that interacts with the ocean but is studied primarily through the atmosphere (Meteorology, Climatology), or a chemical cycle spanning multiple Earth systems (Geochemistry).
