The discipline of studying the ocean as a physical, chemical, biological and geological system. Includes oceanography, the broad study of ocean currents, chemistry, seafloor structure and the life the ocean supports. Belongs here: any discipline whose primary subject is the ocean itself. Does not belong here: hydrology and its water-science siblings, whose subject is fresh water on and beneath the land rather than the ocean (Water Science), or atmospheric science, whose subject is the air above the ocean rather than the water itself (Atmospheric Science). This class holds one live entity today; further marine subdisciplines such as marine geology have a real home waiting here as later mint waves add them.
