The broad foundational fields of the physical planet, each a top-level discipline in its own right rather than a named subfield of another. Includes geology, the study of the solid Earth, its rocks, structure and history; geophysics, the study of the Earth using the methods of physics; geochemistry, the study of the chemical composition and processes of the Earth; geodesy, the study of the Earth's shape, orientation and gravitational field; and geomorphology, the study of landforms and the processes that shape them. Belongs here: any discipline broad enough to be a foundational field of earth science on its own, rather than a subdiscipline filed under one of those fields. Does not belong here: a named subfield of one of these broad disciplines, such as petrology under geology (Branch of Geology) or seismology under geophysics (Geophysical Science).
