Atmospheric Science

Disciplines studying the atmosphere and the weather and climate systems it produces. Includes meteorology, the study of short-term atmospheric conditions and weather forecasting, and climatology, the study of long-term atmospheric patterns and climate over years and decades. Belongs here: any discipline whose primary subject is the atmosphere itself, whether on the timescale of a storm or of a climate era. Does not belong here: paleoclimatology, which studies climate on a geological rather than a historical timescale from physical rock and ice evidence rather than atmospheric observation (Climate Science), or oceanography, whose subject is the ocean rather than the atmosphere even though the two systems interact closely (Ocean Science).
