A geyser is a spring with an intermittent water discharge that is ejected turbulently and accompanied by steam; the formation is fairly rare, requiring particular hydrogeological conditions found in only a few places on Earth, typically near active volcanic regions where magma heats groundwater to great depth. A geyser erupts when surface water descends roughly 2,000 meters and contacts hot rock, causing the pressurized water to boil and erupt explosively; activity can diminish or stop due to mineral buildup, interaction with nearby thermal springs, seismic events or human activity. Similar jet-like eruptions called cryogeysers occur elsewhere in the solar system, including water vapor jets on Saturn's moon Enceladus and nitrogen eruptions on Neptune's moon Triton, though these extraterrestrial phenomena lack the subsurface hydrological system that defines a terrestrial geyser.
