Eyjafjallajokull, a volcano in Iceland's Southern Region, erupted between March and June 2010, reaching a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 4. An explosive second phase beginning 14 April 2010 sent an ash plume roughly 9 kilometers high across northern Europe, prompting about 20 countries to close their airspace to commercial jet traffic and stranding roughly 10 million travelers in the largest disruption to European air travel since the Second World War. The eruption was declared over in October 2010 after three months with no further activity.
