2008 Sichuan Earthquake

A magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck Wenchuan County in Sichuan Province, China, on 12 May 2008 at 14:28 local time, rupturing more than 240 kilometers of the Longmenshan Fault at a focal depth of about 19 kilometers. The quake killed 69,196 people by official count, with 18,379 more listed missing, and triggered roughly 200,000 landslides that dammed rivers into more than 800 temporary quake lakes. It was the deadliest earthquake to strike China since the 1976 Tangshan earthquake and left an estimated 4.8 to 11 million people homeless, with direct economic losses reaching about 845 billion yuan.
