On October 8, 2005, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the Azad Kashmir region of northern Pakistan, with its epicenter near the city of Muzaffarabad in the tehsil of Patikka. The quake caused catastrophic damage and tens of thousands of deaths across Azad Kashmir and northwestern Jammu and Kashmir in India.
