An earthquake struck India and Pakistan on January 26, 2001, with its epicenter about 9 kilometers south-southwest of the village of Chobari in the Bhachau taluka of Kutch district, Gujarat, India. The quake reached a maximum Mercalli intensity of XII, the highest level on the scale, denoting total destruction near the epicenter.
