A coarse-grained, mafic, intrusive igneous rock formed by magma cooling slowly into a wholly crystalline mass deep beneath the surface. It has the same chemical composition and mineralogy as rapidly cooled, fine-grained basalt, and much of Earth's oceanic crust is made of it, formed at mid-ocean ridges; the dimension stone trade often sells it as black granite.
