Bengtskär

Bengtskär is a small Finnish island about 25 kilometers southwest of Hanko, in the Archipelago Sea within the Gulf of Finland, administered as part of the Kimitoön municipality. The island covers only about two hectares and is essentially a bare outcrop of granite bedrock, with just a small portion supporting vegetation. It carries the Bengtskär Lighthouse, at 46 meters the tallest lighthouse in the Nordic countries, built on the exposed rock and now owned by the University of Turku Foundation. The lighthouse was attacked by Soviet forces during the Continuation War in July 1941 but survived, and the island today draws more than 13,000 visitors a year who reach it by ferry from the village of Kasnäs.
