The Karimunjawa Islands are an archipelago of 27 islands in the Java Sea, about 80 kilometers northwest of Jepara in Central Java, Indonesia, with a total land area of roughly 45.6 square kilometers. The main island, Karimun, covers about 2,700 hectares, and the second largest, Kemujan, covers about 1,400 hectares. Geologically the islands are pre-Tertiary continental fragments made mostly of quartzite and shale overlain by basaltic lava, part of the Sundaland continental shelf, and are fringed by extensive coral reefs. Twenty-two of the islands were designated as Karimunjawa National Park in 2001, and the archipelago had about 10,800 residents as of mid-2024, mostly Javanese along with smaller Bugis and Madurese populations.
