Gabbro

GAB-roh
Igneous Rocks

A coarse-grained, mafic, intrusive igneous rock formed by magma cooling slowly into a wholly crystalline mass deep beneath the surface. It has the same chemical composition and mineralogy as rapidly cooled, fine-grained basalt, and much of Earth's oceanic crust is made of it, formed at mid-ocean ridges; the dimension stone trade often sells it as black granite. • Lead section
Gabbro ( GAB-roh) is a phaneritic (coarse-grained), mafic (magnesium- and iron-rich), intrusive igneous rock formed from the slow cooling magma into a holocrystalline mass deep beneath the Earth's surface. Slow-cooling, coarse-grained gabbro has the same chemical composition and mineralogy as rapid-cooling, fine-grained basalt.
  • Article text
It is often called "black granite" commercially, just as other intrusive rocks are called "granite" in the dimension stone industry.

The rocks of the Guiana Shield consist of metasediments and metavolcanics (greenstones) overlain by sub-horizontal layers of sandstones, quartzites, shales and conglomerates intruded by sills of younger mafic intrusives such as gabbros.
