The Wheeler Shale is a Middle Cambrian fossil locality in the House Range and Drum Mountains of Millard County, western Utah, dating to roughly 507 million years ago and spanning the Ptychagnostus atavus and uppermost Middle Cambrian Bolaspidella trilobite zones. It is both a Konzentrat-Lagerstatte and a Konservat-Lagerstatte, preserving hard-bodied trilobites in abundance alongside soft-bodied organisms through carbonaceous film, and consists of highly calcareous shale, shaly limestone, mudstone and thin flaggy limestone, 100 to 200 meters thick; together with the overlying Marjum and Weeks Formations it forms one of the thickest, most fossiliferous and best-exposed Middle Cambrian rock sequences in North America. It is world-famous for the trilobite Elrathia kingii and for soft-bodied fossils including Hallucigenia, Wiwaxia and Naraoia, taxa otherwise best known from the Burgess Shale.
