Fossil Lagerstatten and Fossil Sites

Fossil deposits, lagerstatten and fossil-bearing localities whose own defining description centers on the fossils they preserve rather than the rock unit alone, following the lagerstatte and fossil locality classes used in paleontology. Includes exceptionally preserved lagerstatten (Burgess Shale, Solnhofen Limestone, Mazon Creek, Herefordshire Lagerstatte), named fossil beds, pits, quarries and localities (Florissant Fossil Beds, Messel Pit, La Brea Tar Pits, East Kirkton Quarry), and fossiliferous rock formations whose defining first description foregrounds their fossil content over their rock composition (Tendaguru Formation, Wessex Formation). Belongs here: any deposit or locality whose own defining description centers on the fossils it preserves. Does not belong here: a named rock formation or group described primarily by its rock composition and age rather than its fossil content (Named Rock Formations and Groups), even when it is also fossil-bearing.
