The West Estonian archipelago, known in Estonian as the Laane-Eesti saarestik and also called the Moonsund archipelago, is a group of islands in the Baltic Sea around the Vainameri strait, separated from the Estonian mainland by that body of water. It covers about 4,000 square kilometers and is made up of four large islands, Saaremaa, Hiiumaa, Muhu and Vormsi, together with roughly 900 smaller islands. In 1990 UNESCO named the archipelago a Biosphere Reserve under its Man and the Biosphere Programme.
