Vatnsdalur is a glacial trough valley in the Húnabyggð municipality of Iceland's Northwestern Region, carved by glacial ice during past ice ages. It runs about 25 kilometers north to south with a floor just under 2 kilometers wide at its widest, bounded by the mountains Víðidalsfjall to the west and Vatnsdalsfjall to the east, and drained by the Vatnsdalsá river. The medieval Vatnsdæla saga tells the story of the valley's first Norse settlers and their descendants.
