Valley of Glory

The Valley of Glory, known in Russian as Dolina Slavy, is a valley on the right bank of the Zapadnaya Litsa River in Murmansk Oblast, Russia, and the site of a major battle in the summer of 1941 when German forces attacked toward Murmansk. Soviet troops repelled the offensive, and the front line then held static until the autumn of 1944. A memorial to the roughly 7,000 Soviet soldiers who died defending the Arctic was established at the site in 1959, when it also took its present name, replacing the earlier name Valley of Death; the memorial was renamed again, to Monument to the Fallen, by regional cultural authorities in 2018, the same year the remains of seventy two more Red Army soldiers were interred there.
