Val d'Anniviers is a Swiss Alpine valley in the district of Sierre in the canton of Valais, extending south from the Rhône Valley on the northern slopes of the Pennine Alps. It is a U-shaped valley, the classic form left by glacial erosion, running about 35 kilometers from Chippis at 550 meters elevation up toward the Weisshorn, which reaches 4,500 meters. The Navizence river drains the valley, which was historically made up of six municipalities, Ayer, Chandolin, Grimentz, Saint-Jean, Saint-Luc and Vissoie, before they merged into the single municipality of Anniviers in January 2009. The valley is subject to significant natural hazards, including seismic activity and avalanches.
