Upper Engadine is the wide, high southwestern section of the Engadin, a long Alpine valley in the canton of Graubünden in southeastern Switzerland, whose form is linked to the geological structure known as the Engadine Line. The valley follows the Inn River from the Maloja Pass northeast for about 100 kilometers before the river crosses into Austria, staying above 1,000 meters elevation throughout; the Upper Engadine section remains remarkably wide, up to 1.5 kilometers, before the valley narrows further downstream in the Lower Engadine. Around 25,000 people live in villages scattered through the wider Engadin, including the resort town of St. Moritz, near which Piz Bernina rises to 4,049 meters, the highest peak in the eastern Alps. The Inn River that carved the valley eventually joins the Danube at Passau, making it the only Swiss river that drains into the Black Sea.
