The Ubaye Valley is a valley in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department of the French Alps, centered on the town of Barcelonnette and home to about 7,700 people known as Ubayens. The Ubaye River runs 70 kilometers through the valley from its source at Longet Lake on the border with Italy near Monte Viso to its outlet at Serre-Ponçon Lake, passing numerous alpine lakes and beneath the Aiguille de Chambeyron, the valley's highest point at 3,412 meters. Besides Barcelonnette, the valley contains the communities of Jausiers and Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye among others, along with the smaller Ubayette valley. Only six vehicle passes connect the valley to the outside world in summer, several of them closed in winter, which has kept the region relatively isolated.
