The Tremiti Islands are an archipelago in the Adriatic Sea about ten miles off the Gargano Peninsula, forming a single comune in Italy's Province of Foggia and lying within Gargano National Park. The group consists of five islands, San Domino, San Nicola, Capraia, Cretaccio and Pianosa, with a resident population of about 470. The islands have long served as a place of confinement, once holding the emperor Augustus's granddaughter Julia the Younger and, centuries later, opponents of Benito Mussolini's regime. Today they draw as many as 100,000 visitors each summer for their clear surrounding waters.
