Torne Valley is a border region between Sweden and Finland named for the Torne River, which flows through it and empties into the Gulf of Bothnia. On the Swedish side the valley takes in the municipalities of Haparanda, Övertorneå, Pajala and Kiruna, and on the Finnish side Tornio, Ylitornio, Pello, Kolari, Muonio and Enontekiö. The area is also known by its own name, Meänmaa, and its economy has traditionally rested on agriculture, reindeer herding and fishing; both sides share a common heritage from before 1809, when the current border between Sweden and Finland was established.
