The Timna Valley lies in southern Israel's southwestern Arava region, about 30 kilometers north of the Gulf of Aqaba and the city of Eilat. Its rock strata are rich in copper ore that has been mined since the fifth millennium BCE, and in early antiquity the valley lay within the territory of the Kingdom of Edom.
