The Thousand Islands are a North American archipelago of 1,864 islands straddling the Canada United States border in the Saint Lawrence River. The islands vary enormously in size, from landmasses of more than 40 square miles down to outcrops holding a single residence. To count officially as one of the Thousand Islands, an emergent piece of land must remain above water year round and support at least two living trees.
