The Mammoth Site is a fossil deposit in Hot Springs, South Dakota, formed within a collapsed sinkhole that filled with warm spring water roughly one hundred and forty thousand years ago, trapping and drowning dozens of Columbian and woolly mammoths that came to drink. Excavation, ongoing since discovery in 1974, has uncovered more mammoth remains at a single site than anywhere else in North America, and the sinkhole is preserved and displayed in place inside an enclosed building.
