The Stockholm Archipelago is the largest archipelago in Sweden and the second largest in the Baltic Sea, extending east of the city of Stockholm into Stockholm County. It is made up of a very large number of islands, islets and skerries, with published counts ranging from about 24,000 to more than 34,000 depending on how a feature is counted, covering roughly 1,700 square kilometers of which about 530 square kilometers is land. The archipelago has been shaped continuously by post glacial rebound, with its islands still rising by about three millimeters a year, and part of it has been a Ramsar listed wetland since 1989. Around 10,000 permanent homes and 50,000 holiday homes sit across the islands, with the larger, bridge or ferry connected islands the most densely settled.
