Setesdal

Valleys

Setesdal is a valley and traditional district in Agder county in southern Norway, formed by the upper reaches of the Otra river valley and encompassing the municipalities of Bykle, Valle, Bygland, Evje og Hornnes and Iveland. It is historically divided into Upper Setesdal in the north and Lower Setesdal in the south, with the historic region running from the town of Evje northward to the farm Bjaen, where it meets the traditional Telemark district. The Otra river flows south through the valley from the Hardangervidda plateau in Telemark county to the sea near Kristiansand, and Norwegian National Road 9 runs the length of the valley. As of 2025 the valley had a population of 8,633 across a total area of 4,893 square kilometers, with its urban center at Evje.
